Theory of Change - for TSIP

Katie Fowler, the CEO of TSIP https://www.tsip.co.uk asked me to illustrate the organisation's 'Theory of Change'.

It was an interesting one because it involved so many 'moving parts'. Katie very kindly edited down the huge amount of information that they'd originally wanted to include. There's only so much you can fit on an A4 sheet of paper!

 

Family Hubs in Kent

I've been commissioned by Kent County Council to record local views on the development of the new Family Hub model. I was in Margate on Wednesday and Sheerness on Thursday. Very different views and demographic in the two different areas which was interesting. I'll return in a month to gather more feedback.

Council for Disabled Children/Wellcome Trust/Kent Uni/Cambridge Uni

Had a lovely evening way back in June, working on the launch of a creative research project, all about how people experience care in the UK. Many partners involved in the project, and lots of young care-experienced people who are now getting involved. I hope they get a lot out of telling their story creatively.

This was started off in the reading room at the Wellcome Trust (what a lovely space!https://wellcomecollection.org/pages/Wvlk4yAAAB8A3ufp), but I finished it off in my back garden, as it was too beautiful a day to stay indoors!

I was asked to visually summarise a review into the services provided for children and young people in care, in several London boroughs. 

Unsurprisingly the effects of cuts to local services has had an effect on how well these vulnerable children and teenagers feel supported.

 

Anglia Ruskin University - Cambridge

Had a fascinating day scribing at this research-based conference a couple of weeks ago in Cambridge.

How can we use research to create safer more inclusive communities? How can universities use their knowledge and influence to affect change in the wider society? Discuss.

Grassroots work with Volunteering Matters and the GLA

Second job of the year with Volunteering Matters, and the GLA, focussing on upskilling community groups and bring people together for collective action.

Partly a workshop and partly an opportunity to share stories for inspiration and food for thought.

This was held at the pioneering Bromley-By-Bow centre in east London. Thanks to Volunteering Matters for inviting me back, and the GLA for funding this project.

Below is some work I did last year for the Council for Disabled Children, all about campaigns and raising your social media profile. Something on all freelancers' to-do lists as we head into another year!

 

Open University Research Project

 This was an intense day at the Open University in Milton Keynes. 10 different sociologists all reading and then discussing their research papers on the different aspects of food delivery riders. A whole new world to discover!

Live Scribing for Oxfordshire County Council

A live scribing job I did yesterday in Oxford all about digital inclusion - hopefully this image will keep the conversation going, the good people of Oxford already have a number of great initiatives that are already well underway. 

 

Drawings for John Kelly, Musician, Work in progress

John Kelly is a musician who lives with a severe physical disability - but it's not held him back. He's had a guitar specially designed for his needs, and is touring his new album all over the place, from Wales to Holland! 

He asked me to do some drawings for his new album, each drawing is in response to a song on the album. These will be used as a printed insert for the physical CD (I know, old school!). 

John sings from the heart and his life has been devoted to fighting for disability rights and making his and others' voices heard.

Future Water Association - Water Dragons 2022

I was asked back for another round of this annual event. I'm hoping that Proteus's design is put into action soon. Pollution levels in England's rivers are currently very high and need monitoring, as well as more attention from the water industry.

 

Citizens Assembly on Climate Change

The summary findings from Herefordshire's assembly I've drawn up here, in the form of Transport, Land-Use and Buildings. Amazing how many ideas were generated and voted on over one weekend on Zoom!

There were a lot of calls for education on biodiversity, community support, and broader funding for all sorts of schemes, from retrofitting to decarbonising community transport. I really hope that as much as possible of this comes to fruition.

FLARE logo design

I was asked by a London local authority to create a logo for a parenting group that comes together to discuss ways of safeguarding children in southeast London. They are looking to expand and wanted a visual identity to help with that.

The local group name is FLARE and they wanted to reflect the friendly and inclusive nature of the group in their logo, and also welcome fathers and people from all backgrounds.

Process for logo designs: I have a briefing call with the client/s, and as it was in January 2022 this was done over Zoom. My questions focussed on the aims of the group and how they wanted to be depicted and what they wanted to amplify. 

I usually sketch and share ideas while we speak to help with the process. Then I go away and have a think, add colour and then share and wait for client feedback.

Depending on the feedback I iterate once further if needed, or else move on to drawing up the final design.

This time was a straightforward process and went from this little sketch, on to the coloured version below, and then to the final version above.
